I read Ella Enchanted last year at the request of my SIL and nieces. It was so fun to read a book about a fable that I knew so well but from a different angle. It’ll be fun to do that again with some of your recommendations. Thanks for this roundup!
What an amazing roundup! Just moved March to the top of my list (Horse has also been on my shelf forever, my mom is dying for me to read it!), and loved the background of working folklore into Banyan Moon. It's amazing when that *click* happens. x
My childhood reading was full of fairy tales: The Red Book of Fairy Tales, The Green Book of Fairy Tale s, The Purple…I read and reread them all. I like most retellings, but found some took all the wonder out of the originals. For example, I thought all of Gregory Maguire’s books were just a bit too strange. (But I love “Wicked”, the musical - Go figure!) Thanks for another interesting newsletter from my favorite author.
Ooh, I need to take a close look at those books. Demon Copperhead was a great novel. I love the idea of retelling old stories in new or different ways. I discovered White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link, which falls into the genre of modern fairy tales. I have yet to read it, but it's on my list.
Looking forward to hearing more about your romance novel! So cool!
OMG a new book from you?!
Loved American Gods. I still use the raven's quote regularly.
If anyone is interested in a reboot of Alice in Wonderland, check out the "Looking Glass Wars" series by Frank Beddor. Very innovative.
